Faced with the challenge of on the one hand wanting to protect Harry from the Dursleys, but on the other hand needing the Dursleys to think Harry doesn't enjoy visiting her, she teaches Harry to dissemble. As a result, Harry is self-reliant but willing to ask for help, and hasn't been conditioned to blame himself if anything goes wrong. All 7 years.
Harry Potter's most obvious trait was that he disliked his unearned fame by surviving thanks to his mother's protection. In this conversation with the sorting hat, Harry is slightly less intimidated, and discusses with the hat which house would fit best for him.
