On the night of 31 October 1981, Lord Voldemort — unwilling to gamble on which of the two prophecy children was his true threat — went after both. He reached the Longbottoms first and murdered the infant Neville. Then he went on to Godric's Hollow, killed James and Lily Potter, and was destroyed when Lily's sacrifice turned the Killing Curse back on him as he tried to kill Harry.
