The TriWizard Tournament was a year-long plot by Voldemort's minions. Something that long and complicated with so many parts all having to mesh perfectly had many occasions when something could have gone wrong. Especially as some of the actions of the false Moody required experimental spells, never before attempted. Some minor glitches could have brought disaster for the villains.
