At the moment of his death during Zero Requiem Lelouch was sent back, back to when he first received his Geass in Shinjuku Ghetto. That time he was determined to do everything right, and he did. Yesterday he was the Hero who United the World, aged 87 and in bed with his wife, so why is he back in Shinjuku Ghetto, C.C.'s body at his feet, if everything went right?

They thought his plan was to free the world as Zero, but then he became the Demon Emperor. Then they thought his plan was to rule the world as the Demon Emperor, but then he died at Zero's hand. Then they thought his plan was to secure peace with his death, but if he wants to see Zero Requiem succeed, he needs to be there to make sure himself. One-shot and canon compliant, I think.

The problem with prophecies, is that the are immensely vague... My own take on the 'Dumbledore is the real Dark Lord' plotline. Hopefully in canon and currently a Oneshot!
